COMPOSERAlexander Flood began composing at a very early age, but only started to pursue it seriously whilst at Oxford and then as a postgraduate student at King's College, London. Since then, he has built up an enviable portfolio of works across most genres, and received considerable acclaim for his music's dynamism, inventiveness and coherence. His compositions draw on a wide pool of historical and contemporary influences, and several pieces refer directly to specific earlier models. However, a much more important factor has been the assimilation into his music of modal frameworks, in combination with long-range harmonic and melodic thinking. With these strong backbones to his technique, he has produced scores equally successfully for professional and amateur performers alike. His cantata Born in Flight received a great reception at its premiere in November 2016. It sets three texts dating to the period of the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648) or in circulation in the German-speaking world at that time. Reflecting those three decades of strife in Central Europe – an impenetrable web of religious and political turmoil – Born in Flight addresses the transience of life and the horrors of war, especially the displacement of children as refugees.LIST OF WORKSOrchestralSinfonietta (2008) 18’ Three Dreams of Night (2008) 7’ Récits (2007) 4’40” Organ Concerto (2005-6) 17’ Recessional (2002) 4’50”
